New president for Rotary Club of Durban

Rydal Spavins was inducted as the incoming president by outgoing president, Jimmy Lee.

THE Rotary Club of Durban inducted its new president at a dinner at Berea Bowling Club on Tuesday night.

Rydal Spavins was inducted as the incoming president by outgoing president, Jimmy Lee.

Rydal and his fiance Lauraine Lafferty became members of Rotary in October 2012 when past president Mike Hiron approached him saying that the club had moved to Glenwood and were looking for new members.

“He said that as I was retiring, and lived in Glenwood, I should come along and see if it was for me. I visited a few times and after a few visits Lauraine said we could enjoy Rotary, so we joined. What have I had the privilege of doing, had it not been for Rotary, I would not have done,” he said.

The first project Rydal got involved in was the Family Health Day, when the club decided that he would be the site manager and run with it, something he had not done before.

“From there I was very involved in our soccer tournament fundraiser. Then there was the Christmas tree of happiness, which we did for two years, raising funds for The Durban Children Home and the Dalton Creche. We also marshalled at the Comrades and the ECR Big Walk, and the Christmas lunches at The Natal Settlers Home were the most touching,” he said.

In his incoming speech, Rydal thanked Rotary for giving him the opportunity to be part of all this.

“The club members have been most supportive and I must say that it has been a lot of fun and very good social interaction. I will serve my term to the best of my ability,” he said.
