Berea police confirm pipe bomb explosion

Reports state in both cases a cellphone detonator device was used.

TWO pipe bombs were recovered in Berea late last night, 7 July. 

According to reports, at around 11.39pm, a pipe bomb exploded under a car in Gladys Mazibuko (Marriott) Road. A burnt pipe was found by the explosives unit. At about the same time, another pipe bomb was found in Avondale Road. 

Capt Poobalan Naidoo from Berea SAPS said: “We were working at Greyville Race Course when the station commander, Colonel Radebe, was informed of the explosion in Marriott Road. There were no injuries and no damage. All role players attended and the necessary was done. A similar incident took place on Avondale Road and there were also no injuries and no damage reported.”

Reports stated that a cellphone detonator device was used. At this stage the motive is unknown.  

Berea SAPS is investigating charges of contravening the Explosives Act.
