AT an Executive Meeting held on 26 June, eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede condemned the various incidents involving violence, illegal land invasion and damage to municipal property.
She said in recent months there had been a spate of illegal land invasion incidents, and she called on all residents to desist from this illegal practise.
“Building on land without permission is not only an illegal act, but disrupts the Municipality’s programmes as the land might be earmarked for other infrastructure development projects. Some land, such as nature reserves, is not meant for human occupation but are part of the City’s greening strategy aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change. I call on our residents to exercise patience as the Municipality continues to identify suitable land and funding to build low cost housing for our people. Let us all work together to ensure that Durban is indeed the most liveable and caring City,” she said.

Gumede also strongly condemned the incidents of bombing that took place at the ZANU-PF rally at the White City Stadium in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe and the deadly blast that occurred at a rally in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
She said: “We refuse to go back to an era of violence, war and political intolerance. These incidents must never be repeated and must be condemned by all peace loving citizens.”
