Watch Durban Arts Festival offerings at Playhouse this weekend

The Playhouse Company supports Durban shows at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.

THE Playhouse, an Agency of the Department of Arts and Culture, is supporting nine stage shows from in and around Durban which will travel to the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown in June and July.

Each will receive a preview performance at The Playhouse this weekend with free admission to the public.

Thuma Mina, an inspiring fusion of physical theatre, dance, poetry, and film presented by True Life, offers a fresh and optimistic take on South Africa’s socio-political climate. The show will be at the Playhouse Loft on 22 June at 11.30am.

Peace Magents, a courageous and hard-hitting play Ubuhle Bomlazi that highlights the message to township youth that crime does not pay, will be at the Playhouse Loft on 22 June at 2pm.

Truelies, an award-winning production presented by Young Outreach Artist focusing on a young man’s challenges when sent to a psychiatric facility for examination, is on at the Playhouse Loft on 22 June at 3.30am.

On 23 June, Vuka Moses, a physical theatre piece presented by uMphithi Youth Development, recounts the reminiscences of an Umkhonto weSizwe soldier in exile during the struggle. See it at the Playhouse Loft at 11.30am.

Sullied, by Kristi–Leigh Gresse, in which dance and spoken word are fused with powerful effect in a gripping examination of human behaviour and identity, can be viewed at the Playhouse Loft on 23 June at 2pm.

Lastly, Down to the Marrow, a Flatfoot Dance Company production in which the echoes of ancestral Zulu traditions and the need for contemporary urban blacks to find a sense of self are brought to life, can be seen at the Playhouse Loft on 23 June at 3.30pm.
