WATCH: Hundreds gather outside court in support of slain student, Zolile Khumalo

The Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) student was allegedly fatally shot by her former boyfriend.

HUNDREDS of students and senior leaders representing various parties protested outside the Durban Magistrates Court this morning where the man who allegedly murdered 21-year-old student Zolile Khumalo’s bail hearing was being heard.

The Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) student was allegedly fatally shot by her former boyfriend, Thabani Mzolo Khumalo (23) on 1 May in the university residence situated in the Durban CBD.  Mzolo, who was arrested at the scene, faces charges of premeditated murder and possession of an illegal firearm.

Thursday was declared a day of mourning by MUT as students gathered to remember the slain student. Leaders who joined the protest included Bathabile Dlamini, Minister for Women in the Presidency, members of the Inkatha Freedom Party Women’s Brigade and deputy Police Minster Bongani Mkhongi

A memorial service will be held this afternoon to honour Khumalo at the university’s Umlazi campus. She will be buried in Eshowe on Saturday
