Vumatel to complete reinstatement of verges, pavements

Martin Meyer reassures residents that Vumatel will properly reinstate pavements and verges when work is complete.

MORNINGSIDE residents can rest assured, the pavements and verges in the suburb will be properly reinstated after fibre optic cables have been laid. So said ward27 councillor, Martin Meyer, who has received a number of complains from residents over the state of pavements and verges following the laying of fibre optic cables by Vumatel.

Vumatel is currently laying cables in the Morningside area, and will then move to Musgrave, lower Windermere and all the way to Pinetown.

“This is a massive project which started a few months ago, but I have been told the company will finish laying cables in the area by the end of May. People must firstly remember that this is a private project and not a City project. The municipality has given permission for the company to dig up pavements and verges to lay cables and there is an agreement that they have to reinstate pavements and replant grass on verges,” he said.

Meyer said he appreciated that people take the time and effort to make the verges outside their homes attractive and take pride in this, but that this was still City property and the municipality had a right to dig these up.

“I have had complaints from people unhappy with the quality of reinstatement. I met with Vumatel on Monday and they explained this is temporary reinstatement. The company will have to complete laying the cables, then test they work and are online, thereafter they have two weeks to reinstate permanently,” he said.

Meyer said he hoped the work would be done within the next two weeks, thereafter permanent reinstatement would follow.
