UMBILO SAPS officers have had a busy week, with crime prevention duties and outreach projects on the go.
A number of theft out of motor vehicles, theft of motor vehicles and remote jamming cases have been reported to the police. Social Crime Prevention officer, Constable Nondumiso Cele, placed pamphlets on car windows warning the community of such, and providing safety tips.
Capt Pumzile Makaula from Umbilo SAPS said: “Motorists are urged not to leave any visible items inside theirs car and to check physically if the doors are locked,” she said.
Makaula warned the community about a grey Opel Corsa with registration ND 462 728 doing the rounds in the area and urged residents to contact the police immediately should they see it. She said there had three cases opened at the station for robbery with a firearm linked to occupants of this vehicle.

“Cases were reported at Umbilo SAPS from incidents in Newstead Avenue, Prospect Road and Nicolai Crescent. All incidents happened between 6am and 7am and it has been reported that five armed men were driving around in the Corsa. In two of the incidents a cellphone was taken, and in the third incident, a handbag which contained a cellphone, iPad, wallet and passport was taken. People should avoid standing or walking alone. In all these incidents, people were alone,” she said.
Social Crime prevention officer Nondumiso Cele visited Dalton Hostel to hand out winter clothes to residents in need, in preparation for the winter season. She donated items such as jackets, takkies, and blankets which had been donated by the SAPS Umbilo officers.
“We appeal to the community to bring to the police station any clothing items, new and used, in order for us to be able to carry on with such events,” she said. Anybody with any clothing items and food should contact Constable Cele on 079 500 0719.
While she was there, a 28 year old woman who was sleeping on the street with her three week old baby was brought to her attention. The officer contacted social development and a place of safety was found for both mother and child. Umbilo SAPS appeals to the community to alert the police of any abandoned children.
