Change your mindset on crime, says author

“Your Security in South Africa”, which author Craig Roseveare completed in two years, is the most comprehensive book on security.

A FORMER KwaZulu-Natal riot squad policeman has called on SA citizens to “do something” to fight crime in a new book that stands out as a manual of defence and hope in the fight against crime, offering in-depth, tactical strategies to equip you to sharpen your personal security plan to outwit the criminal mind.

According to author, Craig Roseveare, the book, Your Security in South Africa, which took two years to complete, is the most comprehensive book on security published.
Study how to psychologically read and negotiate with the criminal in a robbery situation, learn what to do when threatened with rape and hijacking, understand how to use mirrors, security gates and the latest technology to survey and secure your home or farm.

The book also includes a range of Eastern and Western self defence options and tells the reader where to train, maximise the protective role of dogs and above all know exactly where you stand legally when the criminal threatens you in your home and you decide to defend your family and shoot.

Your Security in South Africa is the most up-to-date and comprehensive guide on practical home and farm safety offering 200 pages of tactical knowledge that will enlighten even the most security savvy.
Potentially lifesaving tips regarding self defence and the pros and cons of various tools and weapons from whistles and sirens to Glocks, grabber-style knives and steel batons, are all covered in the book, published by author House UK.

Roseveare was prompted to write his book after a farm attack on a friend who lived far from access to ambulance and hospital services. He realised how a book of this nature could literally save a life, and how vital it is that citizens know how to keep criminals out and how to negotiate if they do manage to breach a home’s security barriers.

“The prolific farm attacks and murders around the province, in Bulwer, Underberg and the rest of the KZN Midlands and the country are what prompted me to consider writing a book after I realised that just giving people advice here and there wasn’t enough to make a real difference to help people to protect themselves adequately,” he said.

He said the attack on his friend was the catalyst that finally got him sitting in front of his rusty computer, writing up all the knowledge he had learned during his time as a policeman, and of course, there was also a lot of research that went into it.

“South Africans are letting themselves down because the big point everyone keeps making is that something must be done about the murders and farm attacks. But what is really going to be done? When? And by who? If there is anything to be done, we need to realise it is up to every one of us as citizens, and it’s about sharpening up our personal security and making sure we have adequately analysed our properties’ security weaknesses and fixed them.”

He said unfortunately a lot of people buried their heads in the sand, hoping it would never happen to them, however this was where people let themselves down.
“By not being aware, focused and prepared, we create the opportunity for the criminal to identify with our weaknesses and target these, which often results in horrific outcomes. We have to change our mindsets, and become unbeatable against the criminal element. The only way to achieve this is to implement preventative measures and maintain the required level of preparedness,” Roseveare said.
