Precinct management aims to restore investor confidence

EThekwini Municipality will be embarking on a precinct management initiative to restore investor confidence in the city.

IN a bid to retain business and attract more investment to the City, Ethekwini Municipality’s Economic Development and Planning Committee is to set aside R1.8-million for a precinct management programme that will extend over the next three years.

The Municipality, in collaboration with the South African Property Owners Association (SAPOA), have entered into a memorandum of understanding with the purpose of strategically improving the management of Durban’s key economic precincts.

The programme will support and facilitate the establishment of precinct management initiatives in industrial, commercial, township, suburban and rural economic precincts across the city that have been identified and prioritised.

Presenting to the Committee, Head of the Economic Development and Investment Promotion Unit Shunnon Tulsiram said: “In order to attract investment and growth, the City precinct needs to be well managed. Precinct management is an internationally proven approach to urban management.” He said the municipality and commercial property sector had disucssed the importance of precincet management over the past 18 months and was pleased that the initiative was finally going ahead.

Deputy City Manager of the Economic Development and Planning Cluster, Phillip Sithole said he was confident the initiative would work, using as example the Florida Road Precinct which he said had been dying a few years back but was now booming because similar interventions had been implemented.
