Local surf team excel at champs

Locally-based community surf club Sisonke Surf Club from North Beach, Durban, was the only entrant from KZN.

DURBAN-BASED Sisonke Surf Club represented KwaZulu-Natal at the Sea Harvest South African National Interclub Championships at Surfers Corner, Muizenberg, Cape Town, at the weekend.

Twenty teams representing 16 surf clubs from as far afield as Durban, Johannesburg and Jeffreys Bay participated in the annual club event which has grown in numbers over the last seven years.

The locally-based community surf club from North Beach, Durban, was the only entrant from KZN with the A team placing forth in the finals of the championships at Muizenburg beach, and the B team placing fifth.

“I am so proud of my team! They travelled here and won all their heats until they got to the final. Unfortunately I think the travel fatigue and unfamiliar conditions got the best of them,” said founder and manager of Sisonke Surf Club, Alvin Mtatshi.

SWOT team of Muizenburg won the event, Kommetjie Surf Club were second, J Bay Surf Club from Jeffreys Bay were third, with Sisonke Surf Club taking fourth place.

Sisonke Surf Club was founded by Mtatshi, a North Beach lifeguard, in 2015 with the purpose of supporting black surfers.

“Sisonke Surf Club is about transformation and creating opportunities for black surfers to learn and enjoy the sport with the hope that one-day several professional black surfers will emerge from KZN,” he said.

The club has been at the forefront transformation by supporting black surfers with a rigorous training programme and creating opportunities to compete in club events for prize money.

“We work tirelessly to find sponsorships. Fortunately with the help of Surfing South Africa, Sea Harvest and Logistical Solutions Africa we have been able to utilise the limited funds and resources given to us to its maximum potential. We invite everyone regardless of race, gender and economic status to join our club and our events. The goal is to encourage transformation in the sport of surfing,” said Mtatshi.

Sisonke Surf Club is a fully audited non-profit company.
