Bartle House appeals for help to fix leaky pond

The pond has cracks and leaks and needs to be repaired by specialists.

BARTLE House in Umbilo is appealing to the public to assist with fixing the pond on its premises.

Seven years ago Berea Mail wrote an article appealing to the public for donations to build the pond for its resident geese, and people came forward to assist to make this a reality. However the pond now has cracks and leaks and needs to be repaired by specialists.

Sharene Mezher said the home had been losing and wasting water by trying to fill the pond.

“Besides this, as an old age home, we cannot afford to waste money by filling the pond. We have had a pool company come in and the quote was around R30 000. Being an NPO, we don’t have the funds for this,” she said.

Resident, Jimmy Anderson, who along with a friend, Stan Barrow, had the idea to build the pond originally, said the elderly were missing the visits from the birds and geese.

“For seven years this pond has been full and has been a wonderful home for the geese and other birds such as wooly necked storks, spoonbills, hadidas, weavers and hammerkop. The residents sit for hours watching the birds as it is so peaceful. The leaks have been a problem for the past two years as the glue has come loose and the pond needs to be rubberised thickly all around. We really need professional assistance as the birds are dying to swim,” he said.

If anyone can help with the plight of the home, they are urged to contact Sharene on 031 205 1281.
