Sponsor sought for remedial gym

An opportunity exists for a special company to become a sponsor of our Saint Giles' Remedial Gymnasium.

LOCAL companies are encouraged to adopt the St Giles Remedial Gym and enjoy full sponsor naming rights.

Brenda Craig from Saint Giles said the company that sponsors the gym gets full naming rights.

“Can you imagine your company name at the entrance of the gym and on the back wall of prime location Bell Street where Damn Vandal has his amazing eye catching graffiti? By adopting the gym as your CSI project for the year, or more, you will be helping between 30 to 34 disabled patients who visit the gym on a daily basis. Of this number, about 10 are in wheelchairs. Our trained and well-qualified staff do carry out more than 500 treatments per month. This facility, therefore, provides an extremely valuable service to the disabled community of Durban,” she said.

The organisation’s prime location of being close to uShaka Marine World, Addington Hospital and Tafta, ensures extensive foot traffic which means the sponsor company will enjoy extensive advertising coverage.

The Remedial Gymnasium has developed over the years to benefit those nearing the end of their initial rehabilitation phase. A person who has suffered a disability will undergo initial intensive care and rehabilitation in hospital. In cases where patients are not able to afford the continued treatment offered by hospitals and specialists, Saint Giles is able to offer an alternative rehabilitation therapy.
“We do not levy a charge, but ask for patient donations within levels of affordability,” she said.

With the assistance of trained staff, the Remedial Gymnasium offers exercise therapy for disabled persons in the form of active and passive resistance exercise. Regular blood pressure monitoring is also offered.

“The Remedial Gym offers therapy for a range of disabilities which include spinal injury, paraplegia, amputations and stroke victims, which make up the majority of the cases, as well as disabilities resulting from conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis and Poliomyelitis. Basic Cardiac Rehabilitation, as well as continued rehabilitation of hip and knee replacements after surgery also fall within the treatment parameters of the gym. Conditions such as Osteoporosis and Chronic Arthritis may cause various disabilities which are also treated where appropriate,” she said.

In addition to the skills of the qualified staff, the gym has a range of specialised equipment. It has five pieces of total access gym equipment for patient and wheelchair patient use and seven pieces of electronic and computer controlled equipment specifically for wheelchair patients only.

Brenda said ideally, the gym would like the sponsor company to take a five year contract of R500 000 per year.
