City to remove illegal billboards following court order

THE eThekwini Municipality will be removing a number of illegal billboards that have been erected across the City without proper processes being followed. This is a result of a court order obtained on Wednesday, 27 December by the City’s legal unit to set aside an initial court order by the company in question as well as obtain a court order allowing the City to remove the illegal billboards.
One company is responsible for erecting a number of illegal billboards without following due processes. Some of the billboards, situated on the M4, M41 and M13, are in a rusty, dilapidated state and could collapse which may cause injury to members of the public.

eThekwini Municipality’s Head of Communications, Tozi Mthethwa, said: “While there is an enforcement team that deals with the removal of illegal billboards on a daily basis, this is the first time a number of illegal billboards have been erected in the City on such a large scale. To erect billboards within the municipal jurisdiction processes have to be followed as advertising is regulated and certain by-laws are applicable. Also, plans have to be approved before a billboard can be erected.”
