City’s defunct CCTV coverage raises concern

Communications spokesperson for the municipality, Tozi Mthethwa reportedly said about 90 per cent of the cameras around the city were not operational.

CONCERN is growing around the number of defunct CCTV cameras around the city, in particular those in the Durban CBD  which are used to look out for criminal activities.

According to reports, recent storms that have pummeled the city are to blame for the non-functioning cameras, but  DA councillor Shaun Ryley said no explanation had been offered in council as to why the cameras were not operational or how long they had been faulty. Ryley said it was concerning as the cameras were essential in the fight against crime. He said recently more cameras had been installed around Durban City Hall in response to a spike in criminal activities around city hall.

In the meantime, the mayor announced at the recent council meeting that repair work to infrastructural damage sustained during the recent storm was set to begin.
The storm has been declared a provincial disaster and representations will be made by Provincial leadership to Treasury for disaster related funds.
