City rolls out Community Work Programme

Supervisors would be working with a team of 25 people in each ward to clean schools, clinics and other government buildings.

ONE Thousand people have been employed by eThekwini Municipality to be part of the city’s Community Work Programme (CWP) to ensure a cleaner looking Durban.

Mayor Zandile Gumede congratulated 40 CWP Supervisors who will ensure the smooth roll-out of the programme in 40 municipal wards as a pilot project.  The induction, by the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs and the Insika Foundation, held at the Durban City Hall educated team leaders about the positive impact this innovative government programme has on people’s lives.  Gumede said  supervisors would be working with a team of 25 people in each ward to clean schools, clinics and other government buildings.

“We currently have a group of 1000 programme participants who will work two days a week and will earn a stipend of R700 a month. This forms part of the poverty elevation programme as most people that are part of this programme were selected from our community upliftment programmes, including ward committees, Operation Sukuma Sakhe and Masakhane programmes,” said Gumede.

CWP Project Coordinator Sihle Cossa said: “Their work in communities will be in line with the Operation Khuculul’iTheku Campaign. Over and above cleaning municipal buildings and schools, they will also be working in community gardens. This is aimed at encouraging people to venture into farming.”
