Be vigilant, says SAPS

Umbilo SAPS urges residents to be vigilant after a woman was attacked and mugged outside her house in Glenwood.

UMBILO SAPS has urged residents to be vigilant at all times, following a mugging in Esther Roberts Road on Monday.

According to Capt Pumzile Makaula from Umbilo SAPS, at around 10am, a 57-year-old woman was attacked by two women when she got out of her car to open the gate to her home.

“The two women approached her and asked her if she could provide them with food. The complainant did not have any food to offer them and showed them a church which could provide food. As she pointed towards the church, one of the suspects grabbed her hand and tried to get her rings off her fingers. The other suspect grabbed the chain she was wearing and they fled the scene,” said Makaula.

She said police were appealing to the community to be careful of people going around pretending to be looking for jobs, asking for directions and for food.

“Please be vigilant at all times,” she said.

In another incident on Monday, Capt Makaula said at around 1pm, a community member alerted the police to a woman who was dealing in drugs at the intersection of Somerset Avenue and Ferguson Road.

“Umbilo Police searched the women and found her in possession of a black plastic bag which contained a white powder suspected to be cocaine,” she said.

“We appreciate all community members who support the police in the fight against crime. We encourage all others to follow suit. The police will make sure that all informers remain anonymous,” said Makaula.
