Glenmore resident counts the costs after mudslide

"I am not looking for them to pay for the damages because i was told that i should claim that from my insurance. All i am asking is for them to fix the banks."

GLENMORE resident, Louis Naidoo who lives in Alkernaar Road has appealed to the Department of Education and Glenmore Primary School to stabilise an embankment above his home by planting trees in an effort to prevent future mudslides, but says his pleas have fallen on deaf ears.

Naidoo is among the many who were left devastated after heavy storms hit Durban last month leaving a trail of destruction.

His home, swimming pool, and an outside building were flooded with with mud forcing him and his family to seek accommodation elsewhere.

“I am not looking for them to pay for the damages because I was told that I should claim from my insurance. All I am asking is for them to fix the bank. I spoke to the principal who said he would speak to the department who have since visited the site, but I was informed that the department was not prepared to do anything because they have a lot to do. We constantly living under threat and feel very vulnerable. Should the storm return at anytime we will be in danger,” said Naidoo.

When asked for comment, the school’s principal David Spiteri referred the Berea Mail to his superior.

“Unfortunately, as I am principal of a state school I need to ask you to direct your enquiries to my superior Mr Mthethwa at Acton Road Circuit office. He is the Chief Education specialist for my circuit, Ethusini, Durban Central. I am not at liberty to comment. Thanks for your understanding.”

The school’s bank which Louis Naidoo wants the trees to be planted.

“The amount we have spent repairing, rebuilding and restoring the property currently sits at R1.2 million. We had to rebuild the outside building which was entirely destroyed, the flooring and furniture were damaged and had to be replaced,” said a distraught Naidoo.

Attempts to solicit answers from Mr Nhlanhla Mthethwa were unfruitful despite numerous attempts.
