Enough with the destructive trucking, says community

No to trucks killing our community members and driving off without facing the law.

DISPLAYING their fury against what they call destructive trucking, the South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA), together with communities from the south Durban, held a picket on Saturday. According to SDCEA, the Solomon Mahlangu thoroughfare is continuously infringed by hazardous heavy duty trucks. Residents have consistently complained and are sick and tired of trucks blocking and causing chaos on the roads.

Shanice Firmin, who is the Environmental Project Officer at SDCEA said that due to their reckless driving behavior, the trucks were causing traffic to bottleneck, major damages to the roads, accidents, lawlessness and many lives had been lost as a result. “As trucks approached every viewpoint and junction of the road, we encountered more than 200 trucks in the duration of our protest. This did not halt them from their reckless day-to-day behaviour on our roads,” she said.

“We say no to truck drivers taking the law into their own hands, no to trucks killing our community members and driving off without facing the law. We say no to un-roadworthy trucks on our roads. We say no to trucks jeopardizing our lives and safety,” she added.

“Solomon Mahlangu is not unfamiliar with the numerous lives that were snatched due to trucking accidents. When will our government act and remove this hazard off our roads and shift this transportation to rail and make use of the Cato Ridge services port,” she asked.
