Police offer anti-hijacking tips

Berea SAPS urges people to be aware of tips to reduce the risk of hijacking.

BEREA SAPS has issued tips to motorists to reduce the risk of hijacking.

He said if you are bumped or rear-ended in a suspicious way do not leave your car. Lock the doors and windows and drive to the nearest police station.
“Never leave your keys in the ignition when leaving your car for example when paying for petrol or getting a parking ticket to park. That’s all the time it takes for a car to be stolen,” he said.

He urged motorists to be alert when they are out and about. “Consider who is around you and where your keys are. Don’t have your keys in view when going to the bank or paying for petrol.

Be aware of other cars around you and never stop too close to the car in front of you,” he said.

He advised people to use common sense in different circumstances and not to put themselves in danger.
“Trust your instincts if it happens to you. Get away from the scene as quickly as possible and report to the police immediately,” he said.
