Get ready for memorial wall fundraiser

A parishioner at St Peter's Catholic Church is raising funds to build a wall of remembrance at the church.

A FLEAMARKET will be held at St Peter’s Catholic Church in Mahatma Gandhi Road, Durban, on 28 October from 4pm, in a bid to raise funds to erect a memorial wall at the church.

Parishioner, Cecile Kathan, said she had approached East Coast Architects who designed a model of the memorial wall for her, and she has been hard at work hosting events to raise funds to make this project a reality.

“There are a lot of ashes buried at the church and at the grotto at the entrance to the church. I feel something needs to be done to remember these people who are buried here,” she said.

Cecile has attended the church for the past 17 years and has been very involved with fundraising for the church since 2000. She said this would be her last fundraising project for the church.

“I just felt the people who are buried here have been forgotten, and so many were brought up in the church, baptised here and buried here. I want to erect this wall which will be open to the public, where there will be 150 plaques in memory of those who are buried on the premises, as well as those to come,” she said.

Cecile has also been trying to trace family members of people who were cremated and their ashes buried at the church.

“I want to get hold of these people so that they can take a plaque to remember their lost family members. This is not an easy project and it is going to be very costly. I have received a quote for R200 000, so I have been very busy raising funds through events,” she said.

As part of her fundraising this year, Cecile hosted a pre-spring dance in conjunction with the Lions Club of Durban Host, which brought in a total of R6 430. She has hosted teas after mass on Sundays, as well as raffles, and is also planning a Christmas lunch for later this year.

The fleamarket on 28 October, which runs from 10am to 4pm, is another fundraiser. Tables are available at R100 each. There will be lots of food and second-hand goods on sale, as well as pamper sessions for the ladies and entertainment for children, including a jumping castle.

“Any assistance with my fundraising would be appreciated. A lot of people can’t give financially, but can get involved physically,” she said.
