City warns of scamsters targeting storm victims

Scamsters are posing as municipal officials and charging people who have suffered storm damage a fee to register their complaint.

ETHEKWINI Municipality has cautioned residents to be aware of unscrupulous individuals who are fraudulently posing as eThekwini officials and who claim to have been sent by the Mayor to register people affected by the recent storms.

It is alleged that they are charging vulnerable people a fee for the alleged registration.

The Municipality says its condemns the behaviour and assures the public that no payment is required for them to receive any type of assistance from Government.

Residents are urged to be wary of the scam and be cautious when allowing people into their homes.

Those whose homes have been damaged by the storm are encouraged to report to their local councillor or call the Disaster Management Centre on 031 367 0039 during office hours.
