The “Madiba Jive” is up for auction

Durban artist, Devika Pillay, has donated her painting entitled, Madiba Jive, to raise funds for Saint Giles through a silent auction.

SAINT Giles Durban is hoping to raise much-needed funds by auctioning an original painting, “Madiba Jive”, by well-known Durban artist, Devika Pillay.

Saint Giles is an NPO that provides a multitude of services and support to the disabled, including a remedial exercise gym, work centre for disabled employees, and educational bursaries.

Pillay explained why she chose to paint, and donate, this masterpiece: “I am a South African artist and interior decorator and while my passion for art had humble beginnings long before my studies, my past career as a nurse developed in me a unique compassion and empathy for people. My canvas has become a platform to express the plight of others.”

The painting up for auction.

Women and children are a primary feature in most of her artworks, as are the frail and elderly who she says ultimately suffer the most from social, environmental and economic change. “My artworks can be harrowing and haunting, however the recipients of my paintings appreciate the statement they make and have become conversational pieces in their homes,” she said.

She said Nelson Mandela has been a very influential figure in her life.

“His selfless sacrifice and commitment to fight for the predicament of his people and the country we live in, has inspired me to do the same. This however is on a smaller scale and from a creative platform that addresses the similar issues that we all face today. The portrayal of a man larger than life, who emits an aura that can bring tears to your eyes and a smile to your face. The Madiba Jive is contagious and lives on in our memories as a beacon of hope. I had the privilege of meeting him and presenting him with a portrait of himself. His colourful personality, reflected on his shirts and his warm embrace, will forever be the highlight of my life,” she said.

If you would like to bid on the painting that is 60 x 90cm in size, email to alice@thealist.co.za with “Madiba Jive” in the subject line and the amount you are willing to pay for the painting. There is a R10 000 reserve (minimum bid).

Bids will close on 31 October at 9am and the highest bidder will be advised.
