A NUMBER of issues were discussed at the recent Bulwer Safety and Urban Regeneration Forum (BSURF) meeting by ward councillor Mmabatho Tembe as she addressed those present.

Tembe assured residents that the laying of electrical cables in the ward was on track and that the new sub-station at the intersection of Clark and Bulwer Roads was due for completion in February next year.

Tembe told residents she had been working with DSW to improve cleanliness in the area and had requested DSW use a mechanical sweeper in the area and install more dustbins.

She had also instructed that it focus on roads with high foot traffic such as Hunt, Che Guevara, Brand, Helen Joseph and Clark Road.

“These roads need to be swept more than once a week. I received an update from DSW saying they are no longer using contractors and that DSW staff was doing the work. I have motivated for the department to make use of extended public works programme staff,” she said.

Responding to queries regarding illegal businesses in Esther Roberts Road, Tembe said these were under enforcement.

“This takes a long time, and I urge residents to be patient and to email me for updates,” she said.

She also reported back on the proposed satellite Metro Police Station in Allenby Gardens Road.

“I am working with Metro Police, Parks and the Umbilo Business Forum on this. The Umbilo Business Forum has sponsored a container and this is a work in progress. I believe this will help with social ills in the area such as illegally parked trucks and public drinking. Metro is going to do everything possible to ensure it is manned 24/7,” she said.
