Fisherfolk reel in prizes at Lucky Dip

The event was held to consolidate the relationship between Transnet and the subsistence fishermen of Kwa Zulu Natal.

THE Kwa-Zulu Natal Subsistence Fishing Forum and the South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA), participated in a fishing competition hosted by Transnet National Authorities, as part of the port festival activities. The event was held to consolidate the relationship between Transnet and the subsistence fishermen of Kwa-Zulu Natal.

Prior to the competition, SDCEA and the subsistence folks met with Transnet and ironed out the details with their senior personnel and agreed on the different times and dates for the activities.

Transnet indicated in their report that a section of the North pier, known as Lucky Dip, will be opened on the day for the tournament. Fisherfolk young and old were selected using the SDCEA database of subsistence fishermen who have been active in its struggle and who joined the organisation during marches and rallies and attended meetings held by the SDCEA and KZNSFF. From the commencement of the tournament at 6am, it was clear that the fishermen were going to be blessed with a perfect day and perfect conditions for fishing.

Five winners were identified. First place went to Indrian Chetty for a 1.25kg Sandfish, second place was shared by Avinash and Krishan Navasen both catching 750g Blacktails awhile third place was also shared between Sunrivahsen and Deno who both caught Blacktails weighing 500g. The first placed winner received a voucher of R2500, second received a voucher of R1750 and third received a voucher of R1000.
