WATCH: Durban DUT students threaten shutdown

THE NSFAS scheme came under harsh criticism today as DUT SRC members called for the institution to withdraw from the scheme because it continued to fail students.

DURBAN University of Technology SRC is threatening to shut down the campus if its demands are not met.

The SRC called a press conference on Thursday revealing how the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) was failing students, claiming that more than 100 students had been forced to drop out because NSFAS failed to allocate them funding for accommodation.

The students also called on DUT to withdraw from the NSFAS scheme as it continued to fail countless students across the country.

They said the recent incident at Walter Sisulu University where a student erroneously received R14-m, is one of many similar incidents.

They said that earlier this year a DUT student had received R100 000, but the error was picked up before the student could spend the money.

According to the students, 12000 students at DUT rely on the scheme to pay for tuition, books, accommodation and meals.
