Leon Scharnick brings his Quartet to The Jazzy Rainbow

ALTO saxophonist Leon Scharnick is one of South Africa’s most exciting and promising young jazz musicians.

As a child, he began to learn music by playing the piano, but when he was 19 years old, he picked up the saxophone and then went on to complete a Bachelor of Arts degree in music performance from the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

Over the course of his musical journey he has performed with a number of prominent musicians and musical outfits. Some of these include: Kirk Whalum, Zim Ngqawana, Andile Yenana, Brian Thusi and the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Scharnick also performs regularly with guitarist Menyatso Mathole, one of the founding members of the popular South African band “Stimela” and has been recorded on albums by saxophonist Salim Washington and trumpeter Brian Thusi.

In addition to his work as a sideman, Leon teaches music and also runs his own quartet which is committed to playing original compositions as well as a host of standard tunes from the jazz tradition. Leon Scharnick Quartet comprises of Dalisu Dlazi on upright bass, Sanele Phakathi on Piano and Bucco Xaba on Drums.

He will perform at The Jazzy Rainbow on Saturday 26 August. Doors open at 7pm, The Jazzy Rainbow is at 93 Smiso Nkwanyana Road, Morningside. Tickets are R70 including a free drink for students (T&C). For bookings contact 031-3038398 or email jazzyrainbow@mweb.co.za.
