DHS boy leads Craven Week rugby team

DHS head prefect, Phendulani Buthelezi, has been chosen as the 2017 Craven Week rugby captain.

DURBAN High School head boy, Phendulani Buthelezi was announced as the 2017 Craven Week rugby captain, a major achievement for any school rugby player.

Craven Week will be played at St Stithians in Johannesburg from 17 to 22 July.

Hailing from Mtubatuba, north of Richards Bay, 18-year-old Buthelezi excels in all aspects of schooling life. Apart from keeping up his academic grades within the classroom, he was announced as head prefect for 2017 and similarly as the head boy of Blackmore House, DHS' boarding establishment. He has also held leadership positions such as class captain and mentor.

Throughout his time at Durban High School, Buthelezi has been acknowledged for his talent on the sports field. In 2013, Buthelezi was selected for the KZN Athletics team and again in 2014. In 2014 and 2015 Buthelezi was selected as a player for the U16 Grant Khomo Week and last year, played for the South African U18 Sevens and KZN Craven Week Team.

Apart from this, he has also tried his hand at cricket and basketball, however rugby remains his passion.

This year, Buthelezi led the Durban High School first rugby team as its captain, with DHS enjoying one of its better years of rugby, winning 12 out of 17 games, beating Maritzburg College and Glenwood High School as part of the FNB Classic Clashes. DHS also placed in the top 20 in the school rugby rankings in South Africa at the end of the school rugby season.

According to Buthelezi, his sporting ambition for the future is to play for the Springboks and he hopes to one day achieve this goal.

“DHS is immensely proud of Phendulani's achievements. Captaining a provincial team is always a great honour but also a reward in recognising Phendulani's undoubted leadership ability. We wish him and the team success at the Craven Week,” said Mr Tony Pinheiro, DHS Head Master.
