PARKS District 7 spent the morning of 18 July cleaning up three parks in Bulwer to commemorate Mandela Day.
Led by Jennifer Rampersad, a team descended on the park in Davenport Avenue at 9am on Tuesday, and set to work clearing up piles of building rubble and rubbish which had been dumped in the park, as well as the municipal owned property at 33 Davenport Avenue.
“People around the world are being urged to dedicate 67 minutes of their day to volunteer time for community service today. We have noticed this park and Baxter Park have become dumping grounds, our staff, ward councillor and members of the Umbilo Business Forum got together for the clean-up to make a difference in the quality of life of our fellow citizens,” said Rampersad.
The park and the back of the property at number 33 were full of rubbish, bedding, clothing, human faeces and rubble. Staff also cut back overgrown grass and trees and cleaned verges and pavements.
“We want businesses and residents around the parks to take ownership of them to help Parks do their job. We no sooner clean, than these parks are once again a mess. We urge people to report illegal dumping as this is an ongoing issue,” said Rampersad.
Rampersad said public education from various departments was also part of the service delivery operation taking place at the clean-up.
