New garden for Oakleigh Drive park

"The community asked for a garden to be established in the park, and around four months later, Parks are breaking ground!"

STAFF from the city’s Parks Department have started work on a new garden for the Oakleigh Drive park in Berea.

According to ward 31 councillor, Chris Pappas, the idea to establish a garden in the park was born after a community meeting was held in the park at the end of last year, which was attended by Colin Citera, the horticulturist for the area.

“The community asked for a garden to be established in the park and offered to pay for a gardener to maintain it. Around four months later, Parks are breaking ground!” said Pappas.

Hard at work: Parks staff Nkululeko Dlamini and Lucky Mlawu clearing the area for the establishment of the garden.

Pappas said the establishment of a garden at the park formed part of the plan to establish a conservancy for the area.

“We met three weeks ago and five people from the area spoke to the Conservancy CEO, Rob Crankshaw, about establishing the Oakleigh Conservancy”

“The plans are to name trees in the park, to erect a fence to close off Chancellor Avenue, which is an escape route for criminals. There has already been a park clean-up and four new benches have been placed in the park. It is a lovely park, but it has been under-utilised,” said Pappas.
