SHOPPING malls, restaurants and educational institutions have been approached by Ward 31 councillor Chris Pappas to step up efforts to keep the area around their establishments clean and litter free.
Pappas said it was important that the community, businesses and schools took up collective responsibility to keep the area clean and grime-free.
“Businesses, especially our malls, educational institutions and take-away restaurants, may inadvertently contribute to the litter and filth in our streets.”
“This is not their fault but rather that of patrons and learners who have no respect for our community and discard their litter on the streets and in the parks,” he said.

Pappas has approached The Atrium and Musgrave Centre, to step up their efforts to keep the area around their properties clean.
“This is not a demand or a threat, but a plea to them to help us keep our community clean. I will also be approaching Durban High School and Damelin to assist with the same,” he said.

Musgrave Centre’s management responded to the request by agreeing to assist and said it would also look at a broader programme to get other businesses on Musrave and Stephen Dlmaini (Essenwood) Roads on board.
“I am hopeful that working together we can proactively change our community and instill a sense of pride and belonging,” said Pappas.
