Security officer in shootout with robbers

A shootout and high speed car chase took place earlier this evening in Umgeni Park.

A SECURITY officer was involved in a shootout with robbers this evening (Saturday, 3 June) around 6.40pm. According to Marshall Security, an officer in its Special Operations team noticed a suspicious vehicle parked in the driveway of a home in Anthony Road, Umgeni Park while on routine patrol.

As the officer passed the residence, he noticed the gates were open and he became more suspicious.  He turned around and headed back to the property to investigate further. As he approached the residence, a suspect appeared from the driveway brandishing a firearm and fired several shots in the security officer’s direction, striking the vehicle in the process.

The officer returned fire, hitting the suspect who collapsed as the security officer took cover and called for back up.  Another two suspects appeared and began shooting in the officer’s direction before assisting their accomplice and fleeing in a getaway vehicle in the direction of Browns Drift Road.  Additional security armed reaction officers descended on the area and a high speed chase ensued with the suspects managing to evade arrest.

On further investigation it was discovered that the robbers had stolen several high end and electronic items from the residence.

SAPS is investigating further.
