Local school to represent SA in America

Berea Primary School won the Best Vocal Performance by a Group Junior at this year's Talent Africa nationals

BEREA Primary School walked away with 3 Golds and a special award for Best Vocal Performance by a Group Junior, at this year’s Talent Africa nationals, which were held at the Roodepoort theatre from the 1-8 April.

The school was part of the exceptionally strong Team KZN, which consisted of 115 members. A total of 90 Team KZN members were selected for team SA to represent the country at Talent America in New York from 4 – 13 July 2017. Berea’s Sbahlesonke Nkehli also won gold for her solo Hip Hop Dance.

Sherwin Ganasen, the choir conductor said he was proud of the choir’s performance and excited that they will be will representing the country in New York. Earlier this year the choir did exceptionally well, bagging second place in their category (vocal) with a score of 89 per cent.

Team leader, Charel Haasbroek said: “This year has been an amazing year for the talents of KZN. Last year we had 35 members representing KZN at Talent Africa nationals, this year it was 115. We hope that next year we will grow even bigger and stronger.

Members of the team competed in a variety of talents – modelling, acting, dance, vocals and instrumental – in various categories and age groups. Every member of Team KZN did our province extremely proud.”

“Whats left now is for us to raise funds for them to get to New York,” added Haasbroek.

The KwaZulu-Natal Dance Centre won a total of 33 gold medals and nine special awards while Durban Dance Unlimited walked away with 37 gold medals and 9 special awards. Sarah Perry Nortje was selected as the Face of Talent Africa KZN. The male senior Face of Talent Africa was awarded to Jan Johannes Strydom, vocalist, Cassie Rae Moore won the best senior vocalist.

The overall Senior Winner of Talent Africa Nationals 2017 was Durban Dancer, Miku Tsimori. Team KZN won a total of 131 gold medals, 15 silver, 41 bronze and 39 special awards.
