Drunk drivers, speedsters pay the price
The RTMC has deployed 18000 traffic officers countrywide to ensure the rules of the road are enforced over the Easter weekend.
AN “alarming” number of drunk drivers and speedsters were arrested by road traffic officials in law enforcement operations across the country over the Easter weekend.
In a media release from the National Department of Transport, the Road Traffic Management Corporation’s (RTMC) as well as drunk drivers and speedsters, traffic police also impounded a number of roadworthy vehicles.
A department spokesman said consolidated figures would be released after Easter and said those motorists caught twice speeding on the same route would also be arrested. It also called upon the courts to impose stiffer sentences on perpetual traffic offenders.
Vehicles impounded over the Easter period will not be released until after the end of the Easter weekend.
Motorists travelling on national routes are warned to take responsibility of their actions as they return home and be aware that the RTMC has deployed 18000 traffic officers countrywide to ensure the rules of the road are enforced.
