Durban friends cycle for marrow
A group of cyclists from Durban will take on the Cape Town Cycle Tour to raise funds for The Sunflower Fund.
SPURRED on by the courage of their close friends, leukaemia patients Matthew MacDonald and Justin Kyle, an inspiring group of cyclists from Durban will collectively take on the largest timed cycling event in the world, the Cape Town Cycle Tour 2017.
On Sunday, 12 March an expected 35 000 cyclists will ride the 109 kilometre route through some of the world’s most spectacular scenery that includes the iconic Table Mountain as a backdrop.
Nigel, Ryan and Kyle Dohne as well as Chris Briggs, Dean Lederle and Morne Moller, collectively hope to create more awareness of the need for more blood stem cell donors on the South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR) to give hope to patients, like Matthew and Justin, who are in need of a blood stem cell transplant from a matching donor.
The riders also hope to raise much-needed funds for The Sunflower Fund under the auspices of the Miles4Hope campaign. The Sunflower Fund educates and registers blood stem cell donors to give hope of life to patients suffering from life-threatening chronic blood disorders like leukaemia. Funds raised from the campaign will help The Sunflower Fund to cover the recruitment costs to grow a healthy, effective, ethnically diverse registry of committed donors.
