Durbanites brave wet weather for army celebrations

The crowd cheered on as the military paraded.

DESPITE the inclement weather in Durban, hundreds of people gathered to witness the Armed Forces Day celebrations and the centenary commemoration of the sinking of the SS Mendi at Moses Mabhida on Tuesday.

The crowd cheered on for the country’s military men and women as they paraded and enjoyed the convoy procession parade of 300 fully mechanized military vehicles which included Battle tanks and airplanes. The military exercises showed off the strength of the country’s armed forces, gave the public reassurance that they are fighting fit and are able to ward off threats with the trained soldiers, advanced amour and naval fleet.

Among those screaming the loudest was Bongani Nxumalo, who said it was the first time he saw so many different soldiers. He was impressed with their discipline and professionalism.

“As a country, we have some very impressive weapons. I respect the men and women serving our country as soldiers and upholding the constitution of the country and defending our borders,” he said.

Echoing Nxumalo’ sentiments was Thenjiwe Simelane who added, “I am happy and excited because I have applied to join the army and seeing them in action today, gives me the opportunity to see how the army operates and it also gives them an opportunity to interact with us, the people they serve because most of them work far away from their families.”

On Monday, a ceremony was also held in the United Kingdom to honour the South Africans who died when the SS Mendi sank.
