Russian composers highlighted at KZNPO concert

Don't miss the third concert of the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra’s summer season in the Playhouse, Durban, on Thursday 23 February.

RUSSIAN composers make up the programme for the third concert of the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra’s summer symphony season in the Playhouse, Durban, on 23 February.

All three works on the programme are favourites in their very different ways. The overture to the opera Price Igor is one of the most celebrated works of Alexander Borodin (1833-1887). The overture condenses some of the drama of the opera, an epic set in the Russia of several hundred years ago.

The young Romanian pianist Daniel Ciobanu will be the soloist in the brilliant Piano Concerto No 3 by Sergei Prokofiev. Completed in 1921, this is one of the most popular concertos of the 20th century. It is dynamic, melodious and exciting. Daniel Ciobanu had his music training in Scotland and is now rapidly building a reputation as a performer in Britain and elsewhere.

The symphony of the evening is everybody’s favourite, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6, the Pathetique.

The conductor in all these works will be Daniel Boico, the Israeli-American whose appearances with the KZNPO in recent years have made him a much admired figure in Durban.

The usual pre-concert lecture will be given by Michael Green in the Alhambra Room at the Playhouse, starting at 6.15pm and ending about 6.45pm in time for a drink and a snack before the concert begins at 7.30pm. Entry for the lecture is R10.

Bookings for the concert and for season tickets are at Computicket or Checkers, or contact the KZNPO on 031 369 9438. You can also buy a ticket at the door on the night.
