The Beer and Bunny on the Bay this weekend

IN a slight case of history repeating itself, the Point Yacht Club is looking forward to its next big event in its 125th birthday celebrations, the Beer and Bunny on the Bay on Saturday 28 January. Coinciding with the annual pursuit race, the Bar Anniversary Cup, the afternoon festivities will take place on the newly revamped lawns outside the club as the sun sets. In the bay, sailors will be hard at work competing for the Bar Anniversary mug.

Commodore for the Point Yacht Club, Craig Millar said, “We are looking forward to this event. The idea arose in a planning committee for our big year and it just sounded perfect for everything we are planning for our anniversary. I believe it is an inviting way to welcome folk who are not part of the sailing fraternity to our club, and for them to enjoy our facilities for the afternoon.”

“If curries and beers are not your thing, don’t worry as there will be other options available! It should be a wonderful late afternoon, relaxing on the lawns and soaking up the surroundings while listening to some live music,” he said.

Master brewers will be offering their tasty brews to patrons who can picnic on the lawns and enjoy a local favourite food, the bunny-chow. Confirmed breweries include the family-run The Standeaven Brewery from Hillcrest, proud Durbanite craft brewery, Poison City and a few other options.

Music has been organised with Durban’s very own Gavin Ferguson sharing his unique rock, soulful yet smooth sounds. Also in the line-up is the young, emerging local duo from Lyall Erasmus and Nick Pitman. Erasmus, a wizard on classical guitar, is studying music at UKZN Howard College. She will be supported by the hugely talented Pitman on electric guitar.

Defending champion and Rear Commodore of Dinghies at Point Yacht Club, Myles White said, “It is fitting having the Beer and Bunny on the Bay on the day we sail for the Bar Anniversary mug. Many years ago, PYC did not have a pub, and members would have to bring their own beers etc down to the club for a drink after sailing. After much contentious discussion and debating about applying for a liquor license a motion was finally passed to apply. One of the strongest opponents to this was Charlie Allen, yet, once the license was granted, he was one of the most active members in helping to build the pub hence the facility was named “Charlie’s” in his honour.”

Recalling, White shared, “The pub was officially opened on 28 January in 1953, and in celebration of that anniversary a silver mug which is an oversized beer tankard was donated and is sailed for annually. The date of the event has usually not matched with the actual anniversary, but in 2017 as luck would have it we have it set for the correct date.”
