Long road ahead for orphaned baby monkey

A Florida Road resident is appealing to the community to assist Umsizi Vervet Rescue after helping to get a lame baby monkey to their sanctuary.

EDITOR-A resident of Florida Road discovered a baby Vervet on her patio, having left the mum’s tummy while she was eating.

It was then observed that the little one’s hind legs were both lame.

The two disappeared with the troop and were not seen for some time.

Weeks later the mum arrived on a balcony of a business in Morningside with the little one clinging to her.

An animal lover trapped the mum and baby in her office and called Tracy Rowles from Umsizi Vervet Rescue. With some maneuvering, Tracy managed to separate the baby from the adult and they opened the door and the scared mum ran out. To many this would appear unkind and merciless but the mum would ultimately abandon the baby as happens in the animal kingdom.

The little one is now in a sanctuary for orphaned primates and is responding to some treatment but there is a long road ahead for any sort of recovery.

The compassion of people has been phenomenal, especially that shown by Tracy Rowles who operates the sanctuary having an NPO number 097 737 and has limited finance to keep the sanctuary running

Those who may wish to open their hearts can donate to “ orphan Wyatt “ with bank details as follows; Name of Account: Umsizi Vervet Rescue Centre, Bank: First National Bank, branch code: 250655 Account number: 624 987 321 58. Any contributions will be so appreciated to rehabilitate this unfortunate creature.
