Playstation for children’s ward

Children in the paediatric ward at Netcare Parklands Hospital can now enjoy playing Playstation during their hospital stay.

PATIENTS at the children’s ward at Netcare Parklands Hospital were overjoyed with the donation of a Playstation Vita last week.

Cara Noble, divisional services manager from CANSA, along with Joan Deare, Tough Living with Cancer (TLC) co-ordinator and volunteer, Unathi Ntsaluba, visited the hospital last week to hand over the Playstation to the ward.

Cara said a company, which is a subsidiary to Playstation, donated 10 of the Vitas to various organisations, and CANSA Durban chose to donate the Playstation to Parklands.

“We are really excited about this! Being in hospital for long periods of time is hard on children and their moms try their best to keep them distracted.”

“We run the TLC play programme at the hospital where children are entertained with games, dependent on their level of health. We do reading with the sicker children and puzzles with the more active patients. Now the children can enjoy playing this Playstation,” she said.

Joan said it was the ‘magic wish’ of a former patient, Jedey Naidoo, to have a Playstation in the ward. He was invited to the handover at the ward.

“Jedey used to say the only thing he would enjoy doing while in hospital would be to play Playstation, so we had to get him here today,” she said.

Jedey got through his treatment by playing a video game which would be wheeled through for him, and it kept his mind on things other than the treatment he was undergoing. He was very excited to see the Playstation in the ward, and took over trying to programme it and choose games for the children to play.
