Hard times fall on Mothwa Haven

Buy a calendar from MOTHWA Haven to help managment to raise funds to provide for the needy.

THE Natal Mothwa Haven has a long and proud association with Durban since its first opened its doors to the first 10 residents in August 1956. Built at a cost of R55 000, it is situated at 11 Deodar Avenue in Umbilo, it is now home to 22 residents who live in self-catering units.

When it first opened, the Haven paid the then Durban City Council rental of one shilling per annum. Today, the rental paid to the city is R2,28. At the time of its opening, chairlady, Margaret Mack declared that the Haven had been built on “cups of tea.” The MOTHWAs of the day were granted a contract to provide teas at all civic functions and were paid for this service. These funds, together with donations from a few generous sponsors, made the venture possible.

The Haven aims to provide affordable accommodation to women of limited means and while it has achieved this over the years, in today’s economic climate it has become increasingly difficult finding funds to deal with an aging building and the costs involved in operating the home. At the time of opening the Haven, there were 25 MOTHWA shellholes in Durban and District who supported the Haven financially. Today there are only four shellholes active in the Durban area and fundraising is becoming more difficult.

The Haven still has 39 years left on its lease with the city and it hopes to be able to continue to provide for those in need. In an effort to raise funds, the Haven is selling calendars at R30 each. Anyone wishing to buy a calendar can contact the supervisor, Mrs Williams on 031 205 1728.

Donations in cash or kind are also welcome and will go a long way in helping to keep the Haven open.
