Be vigilant over festive season, warn cops

Point police are encouraging visitors to the Point area to exert basic safety measures during the upcoming holidays.

POINT police, who generally experience a busy festive season each year with an influx of visitors to their area, have appealed to the public to be vigilant.

Point SAPS communication officer, Captain BJ Simelane urged the public visiting the Point area during the festive season to take note of a few SAPS safety warning tips during the holidays.

“Officers usually have their hands full with keeping crime to a minimum during the December holidays so we ask the public to please be vigilant.

“Do not advertise your personal belongings inside vehicles, such as handbags, cellphone, wallet, cameras etc exposed in your vehicle. Do not leave your firearm in the vehicle. Make sure all doors, windows are properly locked when parking your car. Always close your windows when driving in the Point area so that smash and grabs can be reduced. Swimmers in the beach must not leave their belongings unattended as some people, pretending to be swimmers, steal goods that are not watched over,” he advised.

Simelane added he was happy with the good work of Point SAPS detectives who achieved a good conviction and sentencing in a recent case of attempted robbery, where a suspect was sentenced to eight years imprisonment, in another case of kidnapping the suspect was sentenced to six years imprisonment of which two years was suspended for five years.
