Elderly celebrated for handmade creations

Shoprite and Checkers celebrated KZN's elderly and their contributions to Pretty Things for Little Things, with a prize giving ceremony at the Greyville Racecourse on Thursday.

SHOPRITE and Checkers celebrated the elderly in KZN and their contributions to Pretty Things for Little Things, with a prize giving ceremony at the Greyville Racecourse on Thursday.

According to Vanessa Naidoo, PRO for Checkers KZN, hundreds of thousands of handmade toys, blankets and clothes have been collected and distributed to needy children across South Africa since the inception of the annual Pretty Things for Little Things competition 14 years ago.

“The competition encourages people, especially senior citizens, to put their creative talents to work to make practical, durable and safe items that children can either wear or play with. There are four different categories, soft toys, blankets, clothing, and other articles made from materials such as wood, tin or wire,” she explained.

Naidoo said Shoprite and Checkers are committed to community development and sponsor Pretty Things for Little Things, which is run in conjunction with Age-in-Action. While Pretty Things for Little Things is open to all, senior citizens aged 60 years and older who enter their handiwork stand a chance of winning their share of R200 000 in shopping vouchers that can be used at Shoprite, Checkers or Checkers Hyper stores nationwide.
