Three life sentences for Umbilo rapist

A man was found guilty on three counts of rape in Durban High Court.

THE Durban High Court convicted and sentenced a 26-year-old rapist on three counts of rape of three women in Umbilo in 2011.

Mlungisi Nelson Moyo was found guilty on all three counts of rape.

On 2 July 2011, a 22-year-old woman was walking towards a bridge in Oliver Lea Drive on her way home from work when she was approached by Moyo who allegedly told her not to make any noise and demanded her cellphone. He then grabbed her and covered her with an old blanket and told her to take off her underwear and raped her.

On 9 October 2011, a 28-year-old victim was on her way from work when she was approached by the same suspect on Grosvenor Road, Glenmore, who pointed a knife at her and demanded her cellphone and money and forced her into the nearby bushes where he cut her clothes into pieces until she was naked and raped her.

On 27 October 2011, a 27-year-old victim was raped by the same suspect in Grosvenor Road in the nearby bushes. After he finished he tied her up and left her in the bushes where she was later found by her family.

Police investigations traced Moyo through the cellphones he stole from the victims and he was arrested and charged in January 2012.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lt Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni welcomed the sentence handed down to the accused, and said: “I would like to convey my sincere appreciation for the sterling efforts and congratulate the investigating officer for the tireless work to bring evidence before the court to ensure the successful conviction of the rapist who targetted vulnerable women.”
