Heather Road sinkhole a danger for motorists

Newly appointed Ward 33 councillor, Mmabatho Tembe has hit the ground running, she is working with the Engineering Department to ensure the sinkhole on Heather Road is fixed.

NEWLY appointed Councillor, Mmabatho Tembe has hit the ground running in her new role in the Glenwood and Umbilo area.

Last week she was alerted to a hazardous exposed sinkhole which had developed on Heather Road. “It is dangerous, especially because of the size of the sinkhole which almost covers half the one-way street. There is also no demarcation of road works and is worrying because there are children who walk up the street who could easily fall in,” she said.

A resident who lives at a flat directly across the sinkhole said the sinkhole had developed when a water leak was fixed earlier in August. “It’s been nearly three weeks now and a danger and hazard to us pedestrians walking past. We have to walk in the road to avoid it,” he explained.

Residents say last week a section of the tar collapsed and was only noticed the following morning. “It is scary because cars also speed down the road at night. I think one of the cars must have gone too close to [the edge] of the hole and a piece of tar folded under the pressure. A car could fall in if they don’t know about the hole when speeding down,” he added.

Tembe spoke to residents at the site and contacted the Engineering Services to get the matter urgently attended to.
