City investigates Westgate drainage problem

Ward councillor Martin Meyer is hoping the municipality will fix an underground water problem at Westgate Gardens.

A DRAINAGE issue on the grounds of Westgate Gardens council flats in Morningside has caused a major donga on the property and is being investigated by a City department.

According to ward councillor Martin Meyer, there has been a problem of water drainage on an embankment next to one of the blocks of flats over the past few months as a result of heavy rains. The problem got particularly worse following Saturday night’s storm.

“Water came gushing out from under the cement. The bank has been washed away and mud is washing down into the road below, which is covered with sand. This dries up and becomes dust, which is very inconvenient for the residents. Besides this, this hole is very dangerous,” he said.

Meyer said he suspected there was a broken water pipe underground and said the Storm Water Department had inspected it.

“They didn’t seem to see a problem, however they will be putting a camera down underground to see if they can find the problem. There is no use filling up this hole if it just keeps happening. If the Storm Water Department can’t find a problem, we will have to work with the Parks Department to see if the water can be relayed,” he said.
