Durban schoolgirls injured in bus crash

Two Durban schoolgirls suffered critical injuries and scores were injured when the bus they were travelling in overturned in Amanzimtoti earlier.

SCHOOLGIRLS from Durban Girls’ High have been injured when the bus ferrying them overturned in Amanzimtoti.

According to Chris Botha from Netcare 911, the accident happened this evening on the northbound carriageway of the N2 highway on Umbogintwini Hill.

He said the school bus went through the Armco barriers, rolled and landed in the veld. Of the 50 pupils on board, two are in a critical condition and 28 have serious injuries and the remaining have minor injuries.

25 ambulances, 10 rapid response vehicles and at least 60 medics assisted on the scene.

The local fire department and rescue services had to use specialised equipment to lift the bus to ensure no one was trapped underneath the wreckage.

“So far, we’ve got two people who are critical, the rest sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious. Paramedics and firemen worked fervently  at the scene to stabilise them,” he said.

Botha appealed to motorists to stay clear of the area.
“We ask people to please take another route at the moment. We have to narrow the lanes down to give emergency services access to this accident,” Botha added
