Hijackers flee as women call on Jesus

An Umbilo pensioner says there is power in the name of Jesus, following an attempted hijacking on Friday.

FOUR alleged hijackers got the shock of their lives on Friday night when they accosted four women in Selborne Road, Umbilo.

Stella Southam (63) said it was around 8pm on Friday night when she and a group of women were travelling home after Bible study. She said the women, Val Waldeck (70) and Margie Jacoby (59) were dropping off Delphine Murray (93) at the MOTH Cottages on Selborne Road when they were approached by the men.

“We were dropping Delphine off at the top of MOTH Cottages. I was sitting in the back with Val while Margie had gone to help Delphine to the gate. Val had moved into the front of the car when we heard Margie telling Delphine she must get in quickly and shut the gate. She had seen four men running towards us. Suddenly I saw Margie run to the car and close the door, but she didn’t get the chance to lock it,” said Stella.

She said one of the men pulled the door open and tried to pull Margie out the car, but she kept trying to resist the man.

“Val had hit one of the men and thought she had broken a finger, but she found out later she had torn ligaments in her little finger! I didn’t realise what I was saying, but I just started shouting ‘Jesus!’ and noticed the men looked confused,” she said.

Stella said Val and Margie then started chanting ‘Jesus’ with her and to their amazement, the men turned tail and fled.

“It just came out of me, and Val and Margie joined in. It obviously released angels as the men definitely saw something! They ran like a bat out of hell up the road!” she said.

Stella said during this time, Delphine had still been trying to get in the gate, and had been totally oblivious to what had happened!

“It’s just as well! God protected her too, and this just shows the power in the name of Jesus. The men definitely got more than they bargained for!” she said.

She said she had felt no fear at all during the attempted hijacking and said she had been at total peace.

“I have a strong sixth sense and knew everything would be alright. We’ve often talked about what we would do in case of an emergency, and this just happened, it was God!” she said.

The women were left relatively unscathed, with Margie only noticing a scratch on her stomach from her fight with the man.
