Heavy rains bring rotten tree crashing down

Glenwood resident Chanky Morwara, was relieved the tree on (Lena Ahrens) Road had not fallen on his home.

WHILE motorists feared driving on Durban roads this week as flash floods descended around the City, a Glenwood man feared for his life when a tree came crashing down outside his home on Lena Ahrens (Manning) Road in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Chanky Morwara told Berea Mail he was asleep when a crashing and banging sound woke him up around 4am on Tuesday. “”I heard a loud bang and it sounded like someone was breaking into my place.”

The youngster said he tried to call his friend but did not have airtime so stayed in bed until he heard neighbours outside talking. “I knew it was safe so went out and couldn’t believe the huge tree had come down and was lying across the whole road.

“I have been worried about this tree for a while because it did look like it was rotting, but didn’t think it would fall. Now you can see it is hollow and there’s nothing inside, something has been eating it up so I guess it was bound to happen. Something should have been done sooner. But I am glad nobody was breaking into my home,” he joked.

Glenwood ward councillor, Nicole Graham, said she called the eThekwini call centre immediately to report the fallen tree. “I knew Parks department don’t usually work after hours so also contacted Metro Police to ask for a pointsman to assist motorists as Lena Ahrens is known for morning traffic congestion. There are so many trees that need attention in the area, but there has been a drastic improvement in the past two years, it is a difficult problem to eradicate completely. But this one I believe is a result of the heavy rain. I also heard that someone drove into the tree when it first fell but when I got there the car was gone, ” she said.

Graham asked motorists in the area to remain cautious, as roads were still strewn with debris and water.
