Mr KZN initiates vegetable garden project

Current Mr KZN, Ashley Eddy, initiated an organic vegetable garden at Addington Primary School.

ADDINGTON Primary School received a donation of a self-sustainable organic vegetable garden last month.

Ashley Eddy, current Mr KZN, was given the task of finding a suitable charity/project to work with as a criteria for his upcoming hopes of being selected as Mr South Africa.

Ashley, himself a former Adding Primary School pupil chose the school as the recipient of the donation as he said he felt compelled and inspired to make a difference to the school which meant so much to him. Ashley’s commitment to changing and educating the lives of young children is what ultimately inspired him to run for Mr South Africa.

After sourcing and meeting with suitable sponsors, Ashley put his plan into action. The project began with locating and installing a green house and JoJo tank, preparing the area to be planted, sourcing the seed and seedlings. With the help and guidance from Addington Primary School Principal, Mr Raj Moodley, a total of 30 learners from Grades 4, 5 and 6 chose to take part in the project.

On the day of the handover, an educational gardening talk was given by Nathan Keegan, managing director of EasyGreen. On behalf of EasyGreen, Nathan donated a number of library books, planting pots and EasyGreen humic acid to the school. The children were shown how to plant both seeds and seedlings and with the assistance of Addington’s teachers and external volunteers, the learners split up and had the opportunity to get hands on and plant their very own organic herb and vegetable garden.

The project was an outstanding success and a special thanks went to Claire Bathfield (EasyGreen), Love-Joy Majozi (EasyGreen), Sihle Cele (EasyGreen) and Pierre-Jacques Delport for volunteering to assist on the day and to the sponsors of the project EasyGreen, Grovida, Builders Express, Gobind Construction and Media King Photography.
