Problem property to be sold off

Ward councillor, Martin Meyer said the state of a piece of land in Percy Osborn Road, Morningside is an eyesore.

A PRIME piece of land at the intersection of Keswick and |Percy Osborn Roads in Morningside which has been left to decay, will be put up for sale. According to ward 27 councillor, Martin Meyer, the land which is currently owned by the Roads Departtment, has been the centre of complaints and concern for nearby residents who have complained that it is an eyesore and dump site.

“The land is one of a series of pieces of land owned by the Roads Department which were bought up a few years ago to make a change to the transport system which never happened. This property, as well as a property in Devil’s dip (Percy Osborn Road) have been left unused. I have emailed Roads repeatedly to maintain it. The land needs a serious cut and the wall needs fixing,” he said.

Meyer said he had a meeting 18 months ago with stakeholders at which the Roads Department said it no longer needed the land and instructed Real Estate to put it up for sale.

“Two weeks ago I contacted Real Estate to say it needed to be sorted out. We will meet next week to discuss a sale. This is prime property and the municipality doesn’t need it,” he said.

Meyer said residents have suggested it be turned into a park, but the Parks Department is not interested in developing it.

“Developers can approach the City if they're interested in buying it once it goes up for sale. At the moment it is an eyesore and has become a dump site. Selling the property is the only long term solution,” he said.
